Investigation continues into cause of two fires at home in one day

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A house at 70 Crestwood Dr., in the Southbridge neighborhood, has caught fire for the second time in one day.

Fire was shooting out of the back of the home when Southside Fire Department crews arrived, and it has taken a ladder truck and firefighters putting water from up high on the roof to get the fire under control. Crews are expected to be on scene until around 2 a.m. Saturday morning, according to the SSFD fire chief.

We have learned the family, which thankfully made it out of the home safely earlier today when the fire started in the garage area, were not home when this latest blaze ignited. And like earlier, an arson investigator has been called out to investigate the scene.

"Hopefully there's not a problem, I don't know if we will be able to go back in because it's still so smoky. But the neighbors left to because they couldn't stay in the house, so they went out to dinner. So nobody was home when it started up again and we don't know why,” Tricia Gilliand, neighbor, said.

They used thermal imaging equipment and fully cleared the earlier fire that started in the garage area, according to the SSFD fire chief.  The cause for the second blaze is currently under investigation, but at this point is believed to be "suspicious in nature."

The house had mostly smoke and water damage from the first fire, now the house is a total loss after the second fire.

Earlier Friday afternoon, SSFD responded to Crestwood Dr. to find that a car had caught fire in the garage, filling the house with smoke.

The owner of the home told us he didn't even realize it at first.

"I was the only one in there and I got out.  The garbage man was passing by and saw the house on fire and kicked on the door and I went to the door and he was like, 'your house is on fire man,'" said Dondra Wilson, homeowner.

Right now, Investigators have not yet ruled arson out as a factor, and continue to investigate.
