Maj. Gen. Mike Murray said his goodbyes Friday after two years of leading the Third Infantry Division.
Murray turned over command Saturday in Afghanistan but came home for a recognition ceremony.
He credited the soldiers of the division as well as the community that supports Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield, saying the farewell ceremony was a chance for him to thank the community, not the other way around.
"I could not leave Fort Stewart without thanking people who've been supportive of soldiers and families at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield,” Murray said.
Friday, Washington confirmed Murray for promotion and his third star.
His next assignment will be at The Pentagon.
