Commissioners approve idea to explore roundabout at dangerous intersection

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Effingham County Commissioners gave their approval Tuesday night to explore the option of constructing a roundabout at Blue Jay Road and Highway 17.

There have been 19 accidents at the intersection so far this year.

Since Hwy 17 is a state road, the Georgia Department of Transportation will head up the project.

"It's very close to my home. We've had numerous accidents in that area. It's a concern for the community, and I'm glad we're able to move forward and try to address this safety issue,” said Forrest Floyd, Effingham County Commissioner.

If contractors find that a roundabout would not work best at the intersection, they could consider putting a traffic light there.

However, city officials anticipate the entire process could take anywhere from two to five years.
