The Eagles will be will be without the quarterback that guided them to 381 yards rushing per game last season, as Kevin Ellison will be out the first two games. He’s been ruled academically ineligible, and will miss starts at West Virginia September 5th, and and at home against Central Michigan September 12th.
Ellison rushed for 1,096 yards last season, and helped the Eagles to over a 23 points per game average. He also threw for 1,001 yards Favian Upshaw did get some experience at quarterback last year when Ellison missed time due to injuries. They’ll now have to rely heavily on running back Matt Breida who averages over 8 yards per carry.

“Georgia Southern quarterback Kevin Ellison has been ruled academically ineligible by the NCAA for failing to meet the organization’s academic requirements for football student-athletes and will be suspended for the Eagles’ opening two games, as announced Wednesday by athletic director Tom Kleinlein. The junior from Cornelia, Georgia, will miss the opener at West Virginia (Sept. 5) and the Western Michigan game (Sept. 12).”
