Tybee Island Fire Dept. donates equipment to Savannah Tech

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

The City of Tybee Island Fire Department donated used firefighting equipment to students in Savannah Technical College’s Fire Science program.

The gear is no longer serviceable for firefighting incidents, but will be used for training at the college.

Tybee Island is in the process of replacing its gear and wanted to find someone local that could use it. The donation included 19 helmets, 16 sets of gloves and jackets, 19 pants, 32 pairs of boots and six sets of suspenders.

"It's important for everybody to be making donations supporting this program. It's for Savannah, for local students so they can get the training they need so when they are ready to graduate from Savannah Tech they can go into the fire service. With equipment like this, they learn the basic fundamentals which helps them in their career,” said Chief Ashley Fields, Tybee Island Fire Department.

The donated equipment will be used for various training scenarios that do not involve live-fire including Hazardous Materials Operations and future fire science dual-enrollment programs in area high schools that should be starting next fall.
