Solar panels added to downtown Savannah home

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

About a dozen solar panels were placed on the roof of home in downtown Savannah Tuesday.

The company, Hanna Solar, said they have to go through the city as well as the Historical Society for approval to install panels. The panels are used to re-direct sunlight into the home to power appliances and other items.

The structures cannot be visible from street view.

Business managers say the panels are a huge payoff for homeowners, and reduce usage by 20 to 25 percent.

"The average cost of the systems that we've installed through the Solarize Tybee project is about $15,000. On top of that is a 30 percent tax credit, so for example, a system that would be $15,000, that's going to be about a $4,500 tax credit. And you're going to get your system for about $10,500,” said Grant Tallon, business development manager for Hannah Solar.

In only a few short weeks, Hannah Solar has successfully installed systems on more than 30 rooftops in Savannah and Tybee Island.
