Coastal Center for Developmental Services preps adults with disabilities for local jobs

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Tourism industry leaders got a closer look Wednesday at what one local non-profit organization does to prepare adults with disabilities for jobs in the market.

From screen printing, to assembly, to interview preparation, the Coastal Center for Developmental Services is preparing these folks for roles in local area businesses.

The Tourism Leadership council brought some of their members through the center Wednesday to learn about this sometimes untapped resource. It's an experience they called eye-opening and inspiring.

"Really impressed with the many job opportunities that they provide those with disabilities. And just really making them, giving them the confidence to be productive citizens in the workforce,” Fredia Brady, Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.

"And it's amazing the dedication that each one of them have, and the people that are supervising as well,” said Michael Plummer, Yates Astro.

The Coastal Center for Developmental Services leaders said the vocational programs have ultimately lead to employment for hundreds of adults with disabilities.

"For the first time in our history we actually have more people working in the community than we have in our vocational programs, which is really exciting because it means we're doing our job. Getting everyone where they want to be,” said Felicia Wentway, Coastal Center for Developmental Services Human Resources.
