Local churches robbed in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY CO., GA (WTOC) -

The members of Mt. Calvary in Montgomery County didn’t notice anything Sunday morning, at first.

“We were standing up here talking and one of them looked up and said ‘our speakers are gone,’” said James Harris, Deacon.

So were the microphones and PA system, even framed prints of Jesus that hung in the ladies bathroom.

Someone smashed a window, then used a trash can as a step stool to reach inside and grab a chair to crawl in. Members said they almost has as much damage as theft.

Three churches and a recreation department were hit in Toombs and Montgomery Counties. Bishop Vincent Drummer says a church member at his church found a man stealing equipment Saturday.

“My name's on the board and he just said 'Bishop told me to do it,’” said Bishop Vincent Drummer.

That deacon got a car tag that traced back to James Lee Lewis of Jeff Davis County. By Monday night, investigators arrested Lewis and seized sound gear and more they believe to have been stolen.

“It's absolutely horrendous to even think, and appalling to think someone would go as low as to come into God's house to steal and commit such crimes as this,” said Drummer.

The Bishop said the churches want their property back, but they also worry about Lewis.

“Because his soul is more important than a PA system,” said Drummer.
