Swimmers need to be extra cautious with rip currents on Tybee Island

TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -

If you are heading out to the beach this weekend, you will likely see at least a yellow flag warning because of strong and dangerous rip currents along the coast.

With a tropical system looming in the Caribbean, ocean rescue teams want you to be extra cautious.

Tropical systems, even way off the coast, can alter currents close to the shoreline.

Rip currents should be taken very seriously, according to Tybee Island Fire and Ocean Rescue crews, who make dozens of water rescues each year.

"We are asking beachgoers to stay closer to shore and pay attention to the lifeguards, pay attention to the flag colors and swim near a lifeguard,” said Todd Horne, Tybee Island Fire and Ocean Rescue.
