SAVANNAH, Ga. - Exhibition contests against DI foes Georgia and Savannah State, along with a first trip out West and 10 home dates highlight the 2015-16 Armstrong State University men's basketball schedule, released today by head coach Evans Davis.
Coach Davis' third season at the helm of the Pirates begins on Tuesday, November 3rd, as Armstrong State and Savannah State renew their intracity rivalry for the fourth straight year in the "Battle By The Marsh" exhibition contest at Tiger Arena.
The Pirates then visit the University of Georgia on Friday, November 6th, to take on the Bulldogs for the first time in more than 25 years. The exhibition contest will be Armstrong State's first trip to Athens since November 30th, 1990, when the two teams met in the regular season and Georgia took a 70-54 win. It will be the third meeting between the two teams in program history and first as an exhibition contest.
Armstrong State's regular season then begins on November 14-15 at the PBC-SAC Challenge in St. Augustine, Fla. The Pirates face Anderson (SC) on Saturday and Queens (NC) on Sunday in the tournament held on the campus of Flagler College.
The Pirates will then make program history over Thanksgiving as Armstrong State flies out to Fullerton, Calif., for the Hope International Mid-November Classic. It will be the first time in Armstrong State men's basketball history that the Pirates will play west of the Mississippi when they take on host Hope International on Monday, November 23rd. Armstrong State will then play Arizona Christian on Tuesday, November 24th, in the tournament.
Armstrong State's home opener will take place on Saturday, December 5th, when the Pirates face Brewton Parker at 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Arena. A road date at Lynn on Saturday, November 12th, starts a three-game road swing that includes the Peach Belt Conference opener at Young Harris on Thursday, November 17th, as well as a contest at North Georgia on Saturday, November 19th.
The Pirates close out the 2015 calendar year with a 3:30 p.m. home contest against Truett-McConnell on Wednesday, December 30th. Coach Davis played and coached at Truett-McConnell, serving as interim head coach during the 2005-06 season.
January begins with a pair of Peach Belt home contests as the Pirates host USC Aiken on Saturday the 2nd and Columbus State on Monday the 4th. Armstrong State plays at Clayton State on Wednesday the 6th and at Francis Marion on Saturday the 9th before playing four of its next six games at home to close out January. GRU Augusta visits Alumni Arena on Wednesday the 13th, the Pirates then go to Georgia College on Saturday the 16th, returning home to host Georgia Southwestern on Monday the 18th and Lander on Saturday the 23rd. Armstrong State's return trip to USC Aiken is on Wednesday the 27t.
Armstrong State closes out the month by hosting Montevallo on Saturday the 30th at 3:30 p.m. The Pirates will honor the 2000-01 Peach Belt Conference championship squad in a ceremony during the game.
February begins with road trips to Flagler on Wednesday the 3rd and at GRU Augusta on Saturday the 6th. The Pirates host Francis Marion on Wednesday the 10th, then visit UNC Pembroke on Saturday the 13th and Lander on Saturday the 17th. The Pirates' final regular season home game of 2015-16 will be against UNC Pembroke on Saturday, February 20th, at 7:30 p.m., with the regular season finale coming at Flagler on Wednesday the 24th.
Coach Davis returns six players from last season's squad that went 6-19, including senior Nick Scott, who ranked fourth in the Peach Belt in three-point percentage (.434), as well as senior Shaquiell Mitchell, who averaged 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2014-15.
