According to the GBI, the mayor and city clerk in Alamo, Wheeler County, are charged with stealing money from the city.
Mayor Debbie Fountain and City Clerk Gail Brown were arrested Friday and charged with one count each of felony theft, according to a news release.
The GBI says Fountain and Brown turned themselves into the Wheeler County Sheriff's Office.
The case is still under investigation.
On Friday, Scott Whitley, special agent in charge of the GBI's Eastman office, declined to comment on how much was missing or how it was taken.He said Fountain and Brown have been released on bond.In May, GBI agents searched Alamo City Hall and removed city records as part of an investigation into city finances.
