East Georgia Regional establishes scholarship in memory of five GSU students

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

Georgians across the state mourned in April when an interstate crash killed five Georgia Southern University nursing students.

East Georgia Regional Medical Center raised $40,000 through its parent company and employees to establish a scholarship in the name of the five young ladies killed in the crash on I-16.

“It was just sorrowful to lose such promising young people who were ready to do everything they could to make a difference in the world,” said Dr. Jean Bartels, Interim GSU president.

The sorrow still lingers for classmates and professors who knew the young ladies and the legacy they left behind.

“The students in School of Nursing form a family, so these will be family members for us for a long time,” said Dr. Bartels. “Because these students left behind wonderful memories for their classmates and memories that will live on in the school of nursing forever.”
