County commission on local tourism industry

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Fresh off the four day Georgia Governor’s Tourism Conference, Visit Savannah President Joe Marinelli gave the Chatham County Commission a glimpse of how the tourism industry is thriving and developing.

Marinelli showed the commission how hotel occupancy is up over the past several years, from midtown to the airport area hotels. He also explained Visit Savannah’s efforts for booking events in the months to come, including the Rock and Roll Marathon which is expected to be the best year ever in terms of number of participants.

The commission got a look at new projects and new concepts for the hotel industry in Chatham County.

"The theme here, the common theme is what you don't see is big convention hotels. You see all boutique style hotels, all owned and operated by the big corporations like Hilton, Westin, so forth,” said Marinelli.

Marinelli also mentioned how new airlines at Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport have been a success, including Allegiant, which has express to the airport that they would like to continue service into the next year.
