Bluffton holds appreciation event for law enforcement, first responders

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

The town of Bluffton showed appreciation for its law enforcement officials Thursday night at the first ever Law Enforcement and First Responders Appreciation Event at the Bluffton Police Department.

Hundreds of people attended the event.

Bluffton Mayor Lisa Sulka said that recent tensions around the country between law enforcement and the public inspired her to coordinate Thursday’s event.

"Just the news all over the country. It just seemed everyone was beaten-up fire departments, law enforcement, first responders, you know. And we love our first responders, and we've never given a chance to have the public come to one place where they can see Bluffton Police, Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, and EMS.,” said Sulk.

The event lasted from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

But Mayor Sulka said it's never too late to thank your local law enforcement officer or first responder for their help.

"In this day and age, it's tough for these men and women. They're out there on the street, they're life is on the line, every single minute of the day. They're under scrutiny every single minute of the day. And it makes it tougher and tougher to do their job,” said Bert Defazio, president of the Lowcountry Law Enforcement Association.
