Bethesda Academy honors community members at halftime

Bethesda Academy Blazers held a very special ceremony at halftime against Memorial Day School Thursday to recognize an honorable community organization and an outstanding alum.

The school recognized the Stuart Sligh, Jr. Memorial Foundation’s support of Blazer Athletics, specifically the new commemorative 275th anniversary uniforms.

The foundation was established in memory of Stuart Sligh, Jr., who tragically died in 2012 at age 16.

Bethesda was also honoring United States Air Force Lt. Col. Lance Freeman as a distinguished alum. Freeman is the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate for the 78th Air Base Wing at Robins Air Force Base.

"Stu sort of stood for family, faith, character, class and commitment. Those are sort of Stu's 5's and the fact that they've taken some of that and assigned it to their jerseys is a part of who Stu was. I think it's really, really fitting," said Stuart Sligh, Stuart Jr.’s father.

Thanks to the Sligh Foundation, Bethesda's core values are now represented on the backs of the players’ home jerseys: Pray, Learn, Work, values that also live in the hearts of the Sligh family and the memory of Stu.

As an ongoing tribute to Stu, the Blazers' helmets all proudly display a #5 sticker.
