Suspicious fire at Bluffton Salvation Army still under investigation

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) -

Authorities still have no leads as they continue to investigate a fire at the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Bluffton.

The fire started around 5 a.m. Sunday morning, and fire crews cleared the scene two-and-a-half hours later.

Thirty-six hours later, the smell of smoke still surrounds the store on Fording Island Road.

It was a fire that pretty much destroyed the $70,000 worth of donations inside, and one that officials say may have been set intentionally.

At about 6:30 a.m. Monday morning, the Bluffton Township Fire District notified the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office about the suspicious nature of the fire. A little later in the day, a team of investigators gathered evidence in the damaged store.

Captain Bromage with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office tells WTOC that there are still no leads at this point.

"It's a suspicious fire, and the cause is still under investigation. Arson investigators from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are assisting to find the cause and the origin of the fire,” he said

Three law enforcement agencies are involved with the ongoing investigation into the fire.
