USDA addresses school lunch participation in Chatham County

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Under Secretary for the U.S Department of Agriculture is in Savannah, visiting schools in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System as part of his back to school tour.

Since federal nutrition guidelines have changed to make school lunches healthier, fewer children are buying school lunches in Chatham County and across the country.

Thursday, Under Secretary Kevin Concannon ate lunch with students at Shuman Elementary.

He said the challenge for schools these days is offering healthy foods students will choose instead of the junk food they can bring from home.

"We are taking steps to try to influence, try to make the school environment one that's more inviting to them, particularly high school students and middle school students,” said Cocannon.

Only 63 percent of students in Chatham County take part in the school lunch program, that's below the state average of 69 percent.
