Five students facing charges after fight at Hilton Head High School

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

Five students at Hilton Head High School are facing charges Friday, after a cafeteria fight had the school on a modified lockdown Thursday afternoon.

According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, one 17-year-old male is charged with disrupting schools, and third-degree assault and battery.

Four other juveniles face identical charges, and will be petitioned to family court.

Spokesperson for Beaufort County Schools, Jim Foster, tells WTOC that law enforcement works with school officials to handle school fights.

He said they followed the same procedure they typically do, when fights escalate in the schools.

"We did have a fight yesterday at lunchtime, at the school cafeteria. It involved five students. Staff and law enforcement were able to get the students apart. No weapons involved, and no injuries," says Jim Foster, spokesperson for Beaufort County Schools.

The school district is not able to legally share the specific punishment that each student will receive. However, fighting is punishable by up to six days of out-of-school suspension, that's according to the district's Code of Student Conduct.
