Savannah Fire christens new all-hazards fire boat

Savannah Fire and Emergency Services christened the department’s new all-hazards fire boat Tuesday.

The boat will be used by the department in the event of a natural, technological, or human-caused event involving chemicals, biological agents, explosives, radiological, or nuclear devices. Savannah firefighters will also use the boat for maritime fighting and for fighting fires along the city’s riverfront.

"We've actually been behind the eight ball in that fact that we did not have one for such a long period of time. I guess the way to describe it is it sort of catches us up with what other cities are doing, but I do believe with the capabilities this gives us along with the other assets we have, we are ahead because we have a giant industrial pump to supplement it,” said Fire Chief Charles Middleton, Savannah Fire and Emergency Services.

Savannah firefighters, along with manufacturer representatives, piloted the boat up the Savannah River Aug. 20th after a weeklong journey from Kingston, Ontario where it was designed and built to SFES specifications.
