Sylvania and Screven Co. combine fire departments

SCREVEN CO., GA (WTOC) -

Two fire departments combined in to one this summer, and it seems to be working.

Fire crews in Sylvania and Screven County started training together back on July 1st, when the city took over county fire service.

Their merger combines paid fire fighters and roughly 90 volunteers. The chief said taxpayers in the city and county benefit from the move.

“We can put more people on a fire at one time. It also expands the services that we can offer in the county. We can have crews go around to all our volunteer departments,” said Chief Gary Weaver, Sylvania-Screven County Fire Department.

The county also added sleeping quarters and work stations to the fire station to accommodate the full-time crews as well as inmate firefighters from the department of corrections.

Chief Weaver said the two departments have worked well together so far.
