MONTGOMERY CO., GA (WTOC) -

After months of political wrangling and weeks of campaigning, a new Montgomery County Sheriff takes office quicker than some had expected.

Doug Maybin won almost two-thirds of the vote in a five man race.

“Math-wise, I was surprised. But, as I talked to people around the county, I knew they were ready for a change,” said Sheriff Maybin, Montgomery County.

The election comes after Sheriff Ladson O'Connor was killed in a car crash just over half-way through his first term. The vacancy created a political power struggle of whether O'Connor's assistant would take the office.

A judge said no and appointed an interim. Maybin said it's now time to put the politics aside and focus on law enforcement.

“We've got to go forward. We've got to move forward and mend fences and solve crimes and keep Montgomery County safe,” said Sheriff Maybin.

Sheriff Maybin will serve out the rest of the unexpired term, which ends December 2016.
