Beaufort Co. School District Superintendent's wife voluntarily resigned Saturday amid controversy

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

The Beaufort County School District said Darlene Moss, the wife of Superintendent Jeff Moss, voluntarily resigned from her job on Saturday.

After the school board held a private executive session, following a public input session, regarding claims of possible nepotism.

The situation started when the wife of Superintendent Jeff Moss began her role as an administrative assistant for the district, last Monday.

Close to two dozen community members spoke at a public input session earlier Monday to provide their opinions on the hiring.

"You have a man here who has integrity. He has been able to do certain things that other superintendents have not. Especially when our schools, our underperforming schools, make movement, which I don't think any other superintendent would have done,” said Principal Mona Lisa Dixon, Whale Branch Collegiate High School.

"Dr. Moss has done this on three separate occasions in North Carolina, which I find just despicable. I mean, how could this happen three other times, and this is the fourth time that his wife has been employed by the same school district where he was employed,” said Richard Bisi, Beaufort County resident.

The Board of Education passed several other motions in a closed meeting Monday night, including a motion for the board to implement an overarching policy on nepotism.
