Former Beaufort Co. teacher who molested nine boys released from jail

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

A former Beaufort County teacher who molested nine young boys is out of jail, after he was ruled ineligible for the state’s sexually violent predator program.

In 2002, 57-year-old Phillip Underwood-Sheppard was arrested after a worker saw him naked in a classroom at Coosa Elementary School on Lady’s Island. There was a 7 and 8-year-old in the room as well. There was also determined to have been inappropriate physical contact.

According to the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office, two mental evaluations determined he did not qualify for the program.

Underwood-Sheppard was released from prison last month after serving 13 years of a 25-year sentence.

According to the South Carolina sex offender registry, Underwood-Sheppard now lives in North Carolina.
