City of Savannah sets United Way donation goal

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A big goal set by the city of Savannah to help the United Way.

Mayor Edna Jackson and others are pushing to reach $240,000 as a city.

A pep rally was held Friday morning outside City Hall.

The United Way said over the last few years, Savannah city employees have contributed more to the United Way Campaign than any other municipality in Georgia.

"Our United Way is probably one of the most unique United Way's in the country. There's only a handful out there that can say that nearly 100 cents on the dollar contributed go to those programs that we are funding to make a difference,” said Toby Moreau, campaign chair and market president, BB&T.

"Actually, their contributions and donations fund three programs for Union Mission, our emergency services, our employment training center and our counseling centers,” said Steve Allison, executive director of Union Mission.

Rally attendees were even treated to a special rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner” by Mary Katherine Shearhouse.
