Hampton officer involved shooting still under investigation

HAMPTON CO., SC (WTOC) -

An officer involved shooting has only happened one other time in more than 30 years in Hampton County.

Donavan Riley, 22, remains behind bars at the Hampton County Jail as SLED continues to investigate what exactly happened in the officer involved shooting incident Thursday morning.

According to SLED, a Hampton Police officer got into a fight with Riley around 2 a.m. near Hoover Street.

That's when the officer fired a shot at Riley, who then ran away, and went to the Allendale Emergency Room for help.

Donovan Riley’s mother spoke with WTOC, and she said she was shocked when she got the call about what happened.

"I got a call from the Allendale Emergency Room saying my son had been shot by police. His hand is still, that index finger, the surgeon at MUSC saying he may lose it. Or they're going to try to save it,” said Shelleve Stokes.

Riley faces several charges including four counts of forgery, one count of resisting an arrest with a deadly weapon, and assault and battery in the 1st degree.

He had a bond hearing Thursday night, where bail was set at $175,000.

SLED was back Friday at the Hampton Police Department, conducting their investigation. The officer involved in the shooting will remain on administrative leave until that investigation is over.
