Funeral arrangements are being finalized for a Hardeeville police officer killed in the line of duty over the weekend. Thirty-four-year-old Cpl. Mark Jones was killed instantly when his police car flipped over and hit a tree on Interstate 95 near the South Carolina welcome center about 4am Sunday morning.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident, but they say it was raining and the roads were slick.
A makeshift memorial has been set up in front of the Hardeeville Police Department. A police car has been draped with a black ribbon and a poem written by Jones' eight-year-old daughter is taped to a window.
Jones is the first Hardeeville officer killed in the line of duty in the department's history.
