Furniture superstore coming to outlet mall in Darien

DARIEN, GA (WTOC) -

Darien’s outlet mall will get a new shop next year, but it will open more than just the usual space.

The idea that one mega-store will fill up 50 storefronts has plenty of people excited in Darien.

The rows of empty stores give Tonalisa Holmes a good walking track during her lunch hour. She's watched as one retailer after another left this mall.

“It was really depressing because, all this space, and nobody's here,” said Holmes.

McIntosh County's Development Authority negotiated six months with a company to bring their big box-style store.

“We're talking about home décor, appliances, doors, windows, anything needed to build out a home or a hotel or a whole development,” said Kelly Spratt, County Commission Chair. "It's already built and ready to move in. There's plenty of parking. It's located right next to I-95 and close to two of the fastest growing ports in the nation."

It means 200 new jobs at the mall and the community, as well as more than half a million dollars in expected sales tax to help a community that's relied mostly on property taxes.

“It's going to be 100 percent very good for McIntosh County,” said Holmes.

She and others will still have plenty of places to walk. But the parking could be more in demand than it's been in recent years.
