SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A new running trail around Savannah's Daffin Park named after longtime running advocate and dear friend to WTOC, Robert Espinoza.
The new 1.5 mile rubberized trail is in memory of the Fleet Feet Sports owner, who died suddenly earlier this year.
Espinoza held Daffin Park very near to his heart, and it was a major contributing factor in his decision for Fleet Feet's location when he first opened the store in 2002.
Members of Savannah City Council joined Espinoza's family and members of the running community for the ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday evening.
"It's fantastic. As many hours as he spent running the outside of this by himself anyways and bringing groups over and races over, he'd be super proud that all this, everything is coming together essentially," said Chris Ramsey, manager at Fleet Feet.
"It's been incredible. A big crowd, lots of people running, lots of people enjoying themselves, beautiful weather. I mean Robert Espinoza must be looking down from the great track in the sky, just smiling," said District 4 Alderwoman Mary Ellen Spraque.
After Tuesday's ceremony, there was also a sign unveiling and group jog.
