A Fort Stewart soldier requesting conscientious objector status may not get it. Kevin Benderman says his attorney gave him a letter saying the investigator in his case recommends denying his request.
Benderman spent eight months in Iraq in 2003. He refused to go back with the rest of his unit in January. The Army charged Benderman with desertion and is court-martialing him.
His request for conscientious objector status is being treated as a separate issue.
Fort Stewart hasn't confirmed the recommendation yet.
