SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Georgia's Secretary of State Brian Kemp presented more than 300 Vietnam Veterans from around Coastal Georgia with Certificates of Honor for service and sacrifice.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the start of the Vietnam War.
Governor Nathan Deal has implemented a program to honor Georgians who are Vietnam Veterans with a Certificate of Honor he signs and presents.
Organizers hope to right a wrong but honoring those who face so much opposition when they came home.
"These soldiers all at some time have been recognized in some way, but this mass, well down recognition which is what's been happening to us. But they all have bad memories, so this kind of helps cast all those bad memories, or make them softer," said Luis Carreras, Army Reserve Ambassador.
This year, the U.S. Government has instituted a national effort to honor Vietnam Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.
