SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A big honor for one local non-profit.
A viewing party was held Tuesday to livestream Deep Center young author Andre Massey and Executive Director Dare Dukes' trip to the White House.
The program was a finalist for the National Arts and Humanities Youth Programs Award.
"It really helps a lot of students know, when you're sad or upset, you go to Deep and you know you're able to get it all out. It acts like if you open a can, you know the fizz that releases the pressure, it kind of acts like that. You know, when you're putting the pen to the paper it really helps to diffuse the pressure," said Imani Muhammad, Deep Center student.
André was the only person invited to speak among all of the organizations recognized Tuesday. He told the crowd about his experience with Deep Center and his own personal journey through poetry.
