Some Low Country firefighters are making the grade and saving lives and property at the same time. Firefighters in Beaufort, South Carolina, respond to fires within the standard six minutes nearly 99 percent of the time.
And that's paying off for citizens in Beaufort. Last year, firefighters responded to ten fires totaling more than $2 million in property value. By arriving on time, firefighters kept the damage to just over $193,000.
"Minutes and seconds count when we have a fire," said fire marshal Dan Byrne. "The sooner we get there, the sooner we can get water on the fire and conduct a search and rescue, the easier it is we'll be able to save lives and property as well."
Nationally, firefighters make it to the scene within six minutes only 58 percent of the time.
