BULLOCH CO., GA (WTOC) - Farmers and business leaders in Bulloch County took time Friday morning to remember how big agriculture is for the community.
The Chamber of Commerce named their Farm Family of the Year. Mike Waters and his family grow cotton, soybeans and more on their 1,200 acre farm and raise cattle. They do it all with one full-time employee and only a handful of part-time workers.
The family is humbled but glad farmers get some recognition.
"It's just great to be able to farm the land that's been in my family for 80 years, where my great grandfather, grandfather, and uncle farmed. It's just rewarding," said Mike Waters, farmer.
Speakers reminded the guests that farming loses nearly two-thirds of its family farmers when it passes from generation to generation. They hope programs like this one help recruit the next generation of young farmers.
