2 accused in woman's death during purse snatching arrested

COVINGTON, Ga. (AP) - Police say two people accused of snatching a woman's purse and fatally striking her with a car in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart have been arrested.

Covington Police Capt. Craig Treadwell said during a press conference Sunday that 27-year-old Brandon Shawn Smith and 37-year-old Stephanie Marie Rodriguez have been arrested in Manchester, Tennessee.

The two are accused of repeatedly running over Marsha Johnson in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store in Covington, Georgia Nov. 16 and fleeing the scene.

Treadwell says the pair could be responsible for up to 10 purse snatchings and robberies throughout the Southeast.

Treadwell says police tracked Smith and Rodriguez to Tennessee and the two were arrested during a traffic stop.

The two are charged with felony murder in Johnson's death.
