CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - With Thanksgiving just a few days away, many people are busy stocking up to make their holiday meals.
But students at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School have been busy stocking up to provide meals to people they don't even know.
Pre-K through 8th grade students have been collecting canned goods and other non-perishable items for less-fortunate families in Savannah and Chatham County.
Monday, members of the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council counted and stacked the items. They collected more than 14,000 cans and boxes as well as 15 frozen turkeys.
"One of the things we firmly believe in helping our kids develop is a sense of giving back to their community, being involved in charity works. This, I think, gives them the opportunity, even in middle school, to truly give back to people in need," said Maggie McAllister, 8th grade teacher.
The food will be given to families already identified by the St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church and to the Social Apostolate of Savannah.
