BULLOCH CO., GA (WTOC) - As the temperatures catch up with the calendar, we finally get some cold fall weather, but that can catch you and your home by surprise.
Sunny skies may help in the daytime, but the numbers will plunge overnight. Frank Kennedy works on heating and air systems. He says his phone's ringing off the hook.
"It's picked up today. Definitely a busy Monday. A lot of folks went to crank up the heaters and they weren't working," said Kennedy, Kennedy Heating and Air.
Even worse, when they lead smoke and fire! Kennedy says heating systems need an inspection to start the season, if even they're electric, but especially for any kind of gas.
"You definitely want to get your heater inspected, get your burners inspected. If you turn on your system and something doesn't sound right, turn it off immediately," said Kennedy.
Cooking fires also jump this holiday week. Many of them when folks try to deep fry their turkey.
"It can flash over quickly. It doesn't need to be in your home period. It needs to be done outside. The garage isn't even the place for that," said Ted Wynn, Bulloch County Public Safety.
Kennedy says, whoever you call, get the furnace checked before things get colder.
Wynn says the good side of this cold snap is it won't bring any precipitation, no rain or ice. He says you should use this as a dry run - pun intended - to get ready for the more severe stuff that could be up ahead.
