CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - Savannah City Council members are approving a contact modification that will allow the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Department to purchase four additional license plate readers to go on patrol vehicles.
The license plate readers have already appeared on five vehicles, and that allows the department to capture images of plates in traffic, and better identify stolen vehicles. The original contract approved by council allowed for the purchase of $80,000 worth of the readers.
For four more, the contract amount will nearly hit $143,000.
"What we are aiming at is looking for gun cars, looking for crime cars, and looking to stop the theft of motor vehicles," said SCMPD Chief Jack Lumpkin.
Council approved the measure, and funds appropriated in the 2015 budget will cover the costs.
