CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) - Turkey fires are the biggest issue firefighters run into on Thanksgiving Day.
They say on Thanksgiving, the chances of your home catching fire is three times more likely than any other day of the year. The most common cause: fryers. But Savannah Fire said there are plenty of things you can do to make sure you are safe while frying your turkey Thursday.
"One is to make sure the turkey is completely thawed. Make sure the turkey is the right size for the fryer use the right amount of oil - keep a safe distance between the fryer and any objects or structures around. Always follow the owner's manual and instructions and always ensure you keep kids and pets three feet away," said Savannah Professional Firefighters President Robert Milie.
Milie says if a fire does happen at your home Thursday, be sure you get out and stay out and call 911 immediately.
