SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The City of Savannah is encouraging residents to recycle Thanksgiving holiday cooking oil and grease.
The city gave residents an opportunity to recycle oil and grease at the President Street Wastewater Plant Monday.
If you couldn't make it, they say you should let used oil and grease cool and then throw it in the garbage, using a sealed container.
"They put it in the drain, we have blockages. It costs them by their own private lines. The plumbers come out. Also, it costs the city to unstop the blockage in the city line," said Curtis Cooper, City of Savannah.
They say an estimated 70 percent of all sewer blockages in the City of Savannah are caused by improperly discarded grease.
