FORT STEWART (WTOC) - Hundreds of soldiers and their families gathered outside the Club Stewart to ring in the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony at Fort Stewart.
An ensemble from the 3rd Infantry Band as well as the Liberty County High School Chorus delighted the crowd with Christmas tunes, and Major General James Rainey spoke to remember the deployed soldiers who can't be with their families this holiday season.
"The excitement is in the air, and so the fact that most of the division is here or en route back. You know, we've got folks coming in in the next few weeks so we will have almost the whole division home and that's the first time in quite a while," said Garrison Commander Col. Townley Hedrick, Fort Stewart.
The little ones even getting a chance to write and hand deliver a letter to Santa before snapping a picture.
Friday night, they'll light the Christmas tree during another tree lighting ceremony at Hunter Army Airfield.
