Buie Leads SSU with 10 Points as Women’s Basketball Falls to Jacksonville State 50-35
JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – Sophomore forward Shanikwa Buie led the Savannah State University women’s basketball team (2-6) with 10 points as the Lady Tigers fell to Jacksonville State (4-6) 50-35 Tuesday night in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
Buie shot 50 percent (4-for-8) from the floor and added seven rebounds, while junior guard Taylor-Ashley Shaw led the team with eight rebounds and added six points, two assists and a steal.
Junior center Tiyonda Davis added six points, on 3-for-6 shooting, five rebounds and three blocks, while junior guard Kenyata Hendrix added four rebounds and junior forward Jeremica Edwards added five points and three rebounds.
Jacksonville State scored nine of the first 11 points to start the game to take a 9-2 lead with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter. The Lady Tigers cut the lead to five at 12-7 with 1:56 left in the quarter, but the Gamecocks scored the final four points of the quarter to take a nine-point lead, 16-7, after one quarter. Buie led the team with four points, while Buie and Shaw each added two rebounds.
The Lady Tigers outscored JSU 6-2 to being the second quarter to cut the Gamecocks’ lead to five, 18-13, with 4:04 remaining in the quarter, but two free throws by JSU gave the Gamecocks a seven-point lead, 20-13, heading into the locker room. Buie led the team with eight points in the first half, while Buie, Hendrix and Shaw each added three rebounds. SSU held JSU to one field goal made during the quarter.
The Lady Tigers scored the first four points from two layups by Edwards to cut JSU’s lead to three points, 20-17, with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter. With JSU holding a three-point margin, 25-22, with 4:44 remaining, the Gamecocks scored 10 of the final 15 points of the quarter to take an eight-point lead, 35-27, after three quarters of play. Davis led the team with six points during the quarter, while Edwards added five points and Shaw added five rebounds.
The Gamecocks’ layup at the 7:22 mark, gave JSU a 10-point lead, 37-27, but the Lady Tigers scored the next three points to cut the lead to seven, 37-30, at the 4:55 mark. JSU outscored SSU 13-5 during the rest of the quarter to take home the 15-point win.
The Gamecocks were led by Courtney Strain and Tyler Phelion with 10 points each, while Phelion added 11 rebounds for a double-double.
The Lady Tigers travel to Stillwater, Okla., to face Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State on Sunday, Dec. 27 at 3 p.m. ET.
