How to protect your stuff and your home this holiday season

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

'Tis the season to give, and steal for the bad guys, which is why Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say everyone needs to have their guard up this holiday season.

"When it comes to packages, if it's a high dollar amount, insure it. Don't have it delivered to a house that's empty," Corporal Samantha Stephens said.

Consider having your neighbor pick it up for you if you can't be home when it's delivered, or even have it delivered to your work. If that fails, Stephens suggested you request it to be held at the post office or delivery location.

Also, if you plan on being away for several days, Metro Police can help look after your home. This is a service people don't always realize is available, and all it takes is a simple phone call.

"We encourage you to request extra patrol. You can call non-emergency to request or contact your precinct. Just to let us know you'll be gone from a certain time until whenever you return home," said Cpl. Stephens.

Lastly, no matter how excited you are for that trip, be careful what you post on social media!

"You're pretty much broadcasting to whomever that you're not at home and you're away," Cpl. Stephens said.
