GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - Garden City Mayor Don Bethune and four City Council members were sworn in Monday.
When we chatted with the new mayor, he told us he's excited to begin working with council to make Garden City a better city to live in.
"The first thing, I would like to have a number of town hall meetings to see what our residents want. I think we need to find out what's on their minds and what they would like to see with Garden City. We have a large piece of property located behind our City Hall. I would like to see some senior housing there," said Mayor Bethune.
Mayor Bethune tells us he's aware of the big shoes he has to fill, stepping in for long-time mayor Tennyson Holder. In an emotional interview, the former mayor says he couldn't be happier with who's taking his place.
"If I'd have hand picked him, I couldn't have picked anybody any better. I think if you do this long enough, you get to the point where you don't think you can hold it over to somebody else, but you can. After 24 years, I figured out it's time for me to move on and I think we're leaving it in good hands," said Tennyson Holder, former mayor.
Holder's been involved with the city for 32 years now and he's spent 24 of those with council. He tells us he sees a bright future for Garden City.
