Inauguration held for two newest Statesboro City Council members

Statesboro’s two newest council members got a short honeymoon before it was right into the business of the city.

A judge swore in Sam Lee Jones to the District 2 seat to succeed Gary Lewis and Jeff Yawn for District 3 to replace Will Britt. Both took their posts unopposed.

“The main thing I heard from people was they wanted someone to listen to them and that's something I intend to do,” said Jeff Yawn.

“What I heard from District 2 was they want someone to communicate, and that's something I plan to do. I'm looking to have a town hall meeting to keep people informed,” said Sam Lee Jones.

Council members voted Travis Chance as mayor pro tem, with a provision that the term last only one year and be rotated among the council.

The group also heard an alcohol license violation from Rusty's Tavern. The owner said he'd voluntarily banned customers under age 21, and his ratio for food sales verse alcohol had fallen during that transition. Council issued warning for the first time violation. But that prompted Councilman Phil Boyum to remind the group they have debated revisions to alcohol laws for two years and need to make changes. Yawn agrees.

“I think the ordinance is an issue. We've got to clear it up and make it less complex,” said Yawn.

Between the work sessions, public hearing and a final vote, they hope to finally pass an alcohol ordinance this spring and have it go into effect July 1st, the same as alcohol license renewals.
