A major road on one campus is going through big changes. Construction is underway at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. A section of Herty Drive between Sweetheart Circle and Georgia Avenue will be replaced by a brick sidewalk.
The change is part of the university's master campus plan for traffic and parking. Designers say some students drive too fast there and many from Statesboro use the road as a shortcut through campus.
"The traffic comes through here so fast, I'm afraid to cross the street," said university employee Arnie Wilhoite. "This will be much much better. It may take some getting used to, but it will be safer."
As part of the plan, the university will start bus routes on campus next fall. The buses will run from perimeter parking lots to several stops around campus.
