SSU Releases 2016 Baseball Schedule
SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State University baseball team releases its 2016 baseball schedule.
Highlighting the schedule are 24 home games. The schedule also features 52 games against teams from 12 different conferences.
The Tigers will face teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic, Atlantic 10, Atlantic Sun, Southwestern Athletic, Big South, Northeast, Mid-American, Big East, Sun Belt, Big Ten, Southern and Atlantic Coast.
Savannah State will face a schedule that features seven programs that recorded 30 or more wins last season and three 2015 NCAA Regional participants.
“I think it is one of the most challenging schedules in the programs history”, said head coach Carlton Hardy. "We have some new opponents with good programs like Saint Bonaventure, Alabama A&M, Ball State, Seton Hall, Bowling Green, Iowa and Longwood."
Hardy added that the Tigers will also face some talented in-state programs such as Georgia State, Mercer, Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech.
Twelve of the teams on the schedule finished at least .500 in their respective conferences last season.
"We will spend our first four weeks of the season playing non-conference opponents and then move toward our conference opener at home against the 2015 conference champion Florida A&M," states Hardy.
The season gets underway with a four-game home series against St. Bonaventure. The teams will play single games on February 19 and 21 and a doubleheader on Feb. 20.
SSU hits the road with a game at North Florida (Feb. 23) and then will play a pair of double-headers at Alabama A&M (Feb. 27-28) followed by a trip to Presbyterian (March 2).
Savannah State will host Long Island for a three game series (March 4-6) and Ball State for a two game series (March 8-9).
The Tigers will participate in the Spring Swing at Lakepoint Classic March 11-13 where they will face Seton Hall, Bowling Green and Iowa.
SSU will play at Georgia State (March 15) before hosting Florida A&M in their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener. The Tigers and Rattlers will play a double header on March 19 followed by a single game on March 20.
SSU will close out March with road trips to Georgia State (March 22), North Carolina Central (March 25-26) and Mercer (March 29).
The Tigers will host North Carolina A&T (April 2-3) in a three game series before traveling to Georgia Southern (April 6), Bethune-Cookman (April 9-10) and Charleston Southern (April 12).
Charleston Southern will play at SSU on April 13 and the Tigers will play at Longwood for a three game series April 15-17.
North Florida comes to the port city on April 20 and Savannah State will play at Florida A&M in a three game set on April 23-24.
SSU hosts Mercer on April 26 followed by a three game series against MEAC foe North Carolina Central on April 30 and May 1.
The Tigers travel to North Carolina A&T for their final MEAC road game of the season (May 7-8) before playing at Georgia Tech for their last non-conference contest of the year on May 10.
The regular season finale is set for May 13-14 when Savannah State host Bethune-Cookman for a three game series.
The MEAC Tournament will be May 19-22 in Salisbury, Maryland.
