GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman women's basketball player Kelsey Ellis has been named ScanSource Student-Athlete Leader of the Month for December, it has been announced.
Ellis, a 5-foot-9 guard from Pooler, Ga., has seen action in all 15 Furman games this year and earned six starts. She currently averages 6.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game and is shooting 32.9 percent from 3-point range. She scored a career high 20 points in an 80-52 win over Converse and came off the bench to tally 18 points, connecting on 4-of-7 3-pointers, to key the Paladins to a 68-62 road victory over Richmond on Dec. 1. Ellis also poured in 16 points, including four 3-pointers, in a 75-63 triumph at USC Upstate on Dec. 12.
A three-year letterwinner, she ranked second in the Southern Conference in 3-point field goal percentage a year ago, converting 39.5 percent of her chances (49-of-124) while helping Furman to a 19-14 campaign and second consecutive post-season tournament appearance.
The senior boasts a 3.49 grade point average in English and is a three-time SoCon Academic Honor Roll selection. She is among 13 women in the Senior Order, whose selections are based on integrity, intelligence, and involvement in the university. She is a member of SAAC and is a two-time participant in May X, making travel writing adventures to the Rocky Mountains and Italy.
In addition, Ellis serves as leader in Young Life, mentoring high school girls through weekly Bible study and worship at club meetings.
The ScanSource Student-Athlete Leader of the Month Award was created this year to honor Furman student-athletes who excel in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. Ellis will be honored with the December award during the Jan. 30 Furman-ETSU home men's basketball game, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. in Timmons Arena.
