Honor Flight Savannah: Volunteers, veterans needed

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Local heroes want you to go to Washington D.C. with them.

Honor Flight Savannah is in need of volunteers.

They need guardian volunteers and they're also looking for more veterans to go on the trip.

If you are a veteran of World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, you are eligible to apply.  If you would like to go as a guardian to help the veterans on this trip, they are in need of volunteers for that as well.

Those with Honor Flight Savannah say it's a very rewarding experience to take veterans to see war monuments in D.C. and they count on the community's support.

"We couldn't exist without our volunteers and Savannah is a great volunteer community especially for anything having to do with supporting the military," said Ed Wexler, Honor Flight Savannah.

Wexler says it’s wonderful to see the positive impact this trip has not just on the veterans, but those who accompany them as well.

"It means a lot,” he said.  “It's a healing process for a lot of them and again for us who go as guardians or on our staff, it's really a great opportunity for us too."
