Savannah City Council have a new mayor pro-tem, chair and vice chairman of council following an election of council officers at Thursday's meeting.
District 1 Alderman Van Johnson has served as mayor pro-tem for four years, standing in for former Mayor Edna Jackson when she wasn't able to make it to a council event or meeting. But Thursday, in a five to four vote, Savannah City Council members decided Alderwoman At-large Carol Bell will take that spot.
This was Alderman Johnson making his case to keep the spot before the vote.
"I believe I served with distinction, I served without passion or prejudice. Certainly I am not the mayor, I've never tried to be the mayor. I recognize what my role was, had no other agenda but to ensure that council moved through an agenda,” said Alderman Johnson.
Alderman Julian Miller is the chairman of council, while Alderman Brian Foster is the council vice chair.
