Promotions and Recognitions Ceremony honors those who keep our children safe

CHATHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

Keeping your children safe at school is a top priority and Friday those who do just that, were honored.

The Savannah Chatham County Board of Education Police Department showed employees and volunteers they are valued and appreciated at the Promotions and Recognitions Ceremony.  The ceremony was held at New Hampstead High.

A number of employees received certificates for their work, others were promoted.

These men and women don't just keep kids safe at school, they also teach students to respect authority, develop relationships with students and teach youth about their jobs.

One of their big focuses is teamwork.

"If we all work together, collectively, we can accomplish great things and in this community, we have to do that to keep our children safe. We have to," said Deputy Chief Dean Fagerstrom, SCMPD Board of Education.

They also recognized one of the newest members of the Board of Education Police Department -- McGruff the Crime Dog!  They thanked him for his service and for taking a bite out of crime.

As they work on the budget for next year, they say they are looking forward to increasing the number of officers in Savannah Chatham County schools.
